I have a custom built machine. My motherboard is an ASUS P5GD2 with American Megatrends Bios dated 2004. Recently my harddrive died, but I had WinXP Home Premium backed up on a smaller drive. I purchased a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA drive and migrated XP onto it using an Acronis Utility. After updating XP to SP2 I installed Vista Home Premium. I then proceeded to update it to SP2 and then attempted to install Windows 7 Upgrade and that's where the problems began. Windows 7 tells me to update ITE IT8212 ATA Raid Controller, but Vista says it's the latest. The driver is 1.7.2.7 dated 11/05. In CMOS the SATA drive is configured as an IDE, the only way it will work. I read all the info in this forum I could find, deleted a virtual drive that seemed to plague others, but to no avail. I've seen this problem all over the internet and even found a guy who solved it, but he had a different bios and I have been unable to get my hands on the seemingly mythical 1.7.2.9 { http://www.windowsdailynews.com/2010/01/25/successfully-upgrading-your-raid-drivers-in-windows-7/} is the link to this enterprising person's tale of terror, and frankly I'm not sure I could pull it off.
Is there something about a SATA drive causing this?
Is my bios outdated?

Is my controller card outdated?
I had Windows 7 on the recently deceased drive, but it was PATA.
Hmmm. Anyhow, I will check for an answer next week when I return. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: Easy to set up, built in web GUI made initial set up very easy. When it worked, it worked wonderfully.
Cons: The 4TB per disk limit is a nuisance, but not worth losing an egg.
Where this really loses points is longevity. I had this less than 2 years, and it's dying; I'm constantly getting BSOD's and other random errors because of this thing failing. I run a check on the array (which takes 2+ days) and find no errors; less than a week later it errors again.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a RAID to future-proof your setup, look elsewhere.

Don't Be Deceived by Specs and Price2/4/2016 3:01:40 AM
Pros: Specs and price. (Price too good to be true)
Cons: The item (and Sans Digital) are, in my opinion, completely unreliable. Pros: Easy to setup, clear led indicator lights, works as expected
Cons: None so far
Other Thoughts: I've had this unit attached to my media server and it has been running fine 24/7 for the last 8 months. I haven't had any problems with it. I'm using the controller card that came with it and an eSATA cable. I followed the instructions for setup and used the drivers from the vendor's website.
So far I'm very happy with my purchase.

Sans Digital Raid Controller Driver Windows 10
Ppstream english download. Pros: Easy to setup.
Cons: Raid 5 fails randomly once a couple of weeks, for seemingly no reason at all. Power down, wait anywhere between 30 sec to 2hr, then boot up resolves the issue (so far) but it is not something you can count on.
Happens on Raid 1 and Raid 5

Other Thoughts: Also BIOS take forever to boot up. Something I can live with, unlike the random failures.
Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Enclosure is decent cannot recommend that controller card1/18/2015 9:20:21 PM
Pros: External lights and indicators are nice, reasonable compact space, fast when everything is working
Cons: Boot time is extremely slow as it spins up the RAID, but I' ve="" seen="" this="" with="" hp="" controllers="" as="">
This RocketRAID RR642 card is very poor. Getting drivers was difficult because downloads from their site weren't working for several weeks. Even after updating drivers, the driver has crashed multiple times. Twice it stopped responding while doing backup (Win7) and another time the system crashed with a Bugcheck 159, which I was able to verify was caused by driver RR640L.SYS using windbg.

Other Thoughts: Based on what others have said regarding the actual card and the difficulty of obtaining support from the manufacturer (one customer talked about 30 day response time), I am thinking the best option will be to back up all my data and obtain a different card, reconfigure RAID, and then restore the data which is a huge pain.
I would recommend a different solution at least with the controller until Highpoint either makes better drives and supports their product better, or SANS Digital goes with a different card provider.

SAS like speeds for SATA price5/11/2014 8:14:48 AM
Pros: Excellent performance at low cost. I see sustained writes of over 335 MB/Sec when using software raid over three drives. You can' t="" get="" this="" with="" any="" other="" esata="" solution="" currently.="" much="" faster="" than="" usb3.="" the="" included="" card="" handles="" port="" multiplication="" on="" both="" ports="" and="" has="" decent="" hardware="" raid="" capabilities.="">
Cons: You don't want to mix SATA 6 and SATA 3 drives. If you add one SATA 3, the performance of the whole system drops to SATA 3 levels. I benched it as 120 MB/sec in this case.
